Understanding Common Thermal Processing Vocabulary
ITS offers a chance to build a better thermal processing vocabulary by providing
a partial list of thermal processing terminology with definitions.
Access Door Oven Body A hinged door allowing access to the oven internal.
Air Flow Switch Safety Devices A differential pressure switch which senses air flow on oven fans and provide
discrete electrical outputs to control systems.
Air Seal Oven Body Re-circulated air stream with nozzles designed to seal the process
chamber from atmosphere.
Belt Type 1" x 1" Wire Mesh Conveyor Systems Mesh conveyor with 1/2" x 1/2" openings ideal for heavier loads and smaller
product sizes.
Belt Type 1/2" x 1/2" Wire Mesh Conveyor Systems Mesh conveyor with 1"x1" openings ideal for lighter loads and larger product
sizes.
Belt Type Balance Weave Conveyor Systems Tightly woven belt for transferring small product.
Belt Type Chain and Rod Conveyor Systems Conveyor incorporating two driven chains, interconnecting rods for transferring
typically larger, heavier product.
Belt Type Overhead Closed Track Conveyor Systems Conveyor system utilizes formed track to enclose trollies for transfer of light
to medium loads overhead.
Belt Type Overhead I-beam Conveyor Systems Conveyor system consisting of high carbon I-beam track with heavy duty trolleys
for overhead transfer of heavier loads.
Belt Type Synthetic Conveyor Systems Non-metallic belt either solid or woven used in application where metal belts
are not acceptable.
Belt Type Walking Beam Conveyor Systems Indexing system utilizing pneumatics or hydraulics for raising transferring and
lowing of products through oven.
Blast Gate Heater House A single blade sliding damper.
Burner Tube Heater House A cylindrical alloy tube (heat exchanger) that segregates the burner flame from
the process air a.k.a. indirect firing.
Circuit Breaker Electrical Components Automatically-operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical
circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is
to detect a fault condition and, by interrupting continuity, to immediately
discontinue electrical flow.
Circulator Chart Recorder Electrical Components Records process values including temperature and pressure produced in a
circular/wheel chart graphic.
Combustion Blower Heater House Blower for supply combustion air to burner. Can be remotely or integrally
mounted.
Contactor Electrical Components A contactor is an electrically controlled switch used for switching a power
circuit, similar to relay except with higher amperage ratings
Control Panel Electrical Components A flat, often vertical, area where control instrumentation is mounted.
Conveyor Belt Tracker Conveyor Systems Device designed to steer and align friction driven conveyor belt.
Counter Weight Oven Body A pre engineered weighted bucket to offset the weight of a door or force.
Coupling Conveyor Systems Connector between gearbox and drive shaft on conveyor system.
Disconnect Switch Electrical Components Disconnect switches are used for isolation of circuits in industrial power
distribution.
Doors Vertical Lift Oven Body Doors are typical vertical, swing or sliding.
Drive Conveyor Systems Motor in gear box arrangement for transferring power to conveyor.
Ductwork (supply and/or return) Oven Body A sheet metal cavity for transporting and distributing the air to or from the
process chamber.
E Stop Safety Device Safety push button when depressed, designed to stop motion of components in
emergency situation.
Ethernet Switch Electrical Components Allows for remote access to the main system computers.
Explosion Relief Latch Oven Body A factory approved design latch design to release at a certain pressure.
Typically used on oven access doors.
Explosion Relief Panels Oven Body An area of panels that is designed to release from the oven body under pressure.
Explosion relief panels are secured in place by special flashing allowing the
panels to release.
Flame Rod Safety Device A detector that employs an electrically insulated rod of temperature resistant
material that extends into the flame being supervised with a voltage impressed
between the rod and a ground connected to the nozzle or burner.
Flame Safe Guard Safety Device Safety control directly responsive to flame properties that senses the presence
or absence of flame and deenergizes the fuel safety valve in the event of flame
failure.
Flashing Oven Body A heavy gage sheet metal, pre-formed angular channel used to cap a vertical and
horizontal wall panel.
Gas Meter Heater House A measuring gas consumption of the thermal equipment.
Gas Pressure Switch Safety Device Pressure monitor for fuel gasses to detect high or low input pressures.
Gearbox Conveyor Systems A transmission or gearbox provides speed and torque conversions from a rotating
power source to another device using gear ratios
Heater House Heater House Section of the oven that contains the re-circulation fan and heat source.
High Limit Device Electrical Components Temperature indicating device to protect oven from damage in case of
overheating.
Hour Meter Electrical Components Device to measure the electrical energy use of the component or element.
Idler Rolls Conveyor Systems Non driven rolls for support of conveyor belt or product web typically on return
path.
Incoloy Sheath Heater Heater House Electric resistance heating element using incoloy as the manager carrier
to dispense the heat.
Industrial Computer Electrical Components A PC based system used in lieu of PLC for system operation and control.
Insulation Oven Body Typically a glass or mineral fiber bound by resin creating a heat barrier.
Junction Box Electrical Components Electrical housing to enclose the wiring interface between the oven and control
panel.
Lamacoid Electrical Components Lamacoid is a very cost effective material for signage and has a variety of
indoor and outdoor applications including the labeling of machinery and
equipment, cables, etc.
LEL Monitor Safety Device A monitor designed to detect the percent explosive level of an explosive or
flammable compound.
Light Curtain Safety Device Are opto-electronic devices that are used to safeguard personnel in the vicinity
of moving machinery with the potential to cause harm
Limit Switch Electrical Components Switch used to stop motion and/or indicate position
Load Car and Rails Conveyor Systems Typically steel frame mounted on a wide variety of wells and canister for manual
or automatic transfer of product in/out of oven chamber
Modulating Motor Electrical Components Motor designed to open and close oven components including dampers and valves.
These motors can be open/closed or proportional.
Ni-chrome/open wound coil Heater House A series of ni-chrome wires that are rack mounted in a serpentine pattern that
manages dispense heat.
Nozzles Oven Body A preformed sheet metal discharge rectangular slot to manage the process air.
Ovens will have a series of nozzles to make up the air stream.
Opposed Blade Damper Heater House Alternating blades set opposed (left right left right) that are linked together
for volume control.
Oven Panel Construction Oven Body A self supporting insulated assembly that is incased in a sheet metal skin.
Overload/Heater Electrical Components Device mounted to a contactor to detect a fault condition and, by interrupting
continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow.
Parallel Blade Damper Heater House A series of blades that open and close in parallel.
Peep Sight Heater House Viewing port on gas burner typically using a high temperature rated glass sight.
Pilot Light Electrical Components Illumated signal to indicate whether the component is powered on or powered off.
Pilot Regulator Safety Device A device that maintains a constant outlet pressure to the pilot flame of the
burner.
PLC Electrical Components Programmable logic controller
Pressure Transducer Electrical Components Device to measure pressure and convert to an electric signal.
Purge Timer Safety Device A timer to ensure the replacement of a flammable atmosphere with another gas
that when complete results in a non flammable final state.
Push Button Electrical Components A simple switch mechanism for controlling some aspect of a machine or a process.
Push-to-test Light Electrical Components A pilot light, when pushed or pressed, will verify light bulb operation.
RTD Electrical Components Resistance Temperature Detectors
Safety Beacon Safety Device Rotating flashing or constant light for operator indication of system status.
Safety Shutoff Valve/ Gas Valve Linkage Safety Device A normally closed valve installed in the piping that closes automatically that
shut off the fuel in the event of abnormal conditions or shutdown.
SCR Electrical Components Silicone Control Recectifier allows for zero to 100% proportional control of
electric resistance heating elements.
Shaft Cooler Heater House A metallic heat sink designed to pull energy from the shaft and dispensed into
the atmosphere.
Shear Pin Conveyor Systems A shear pin is a safety device installed in a drive train that is designed to
break in the case of a mechanical overload, preventing other, more-expensive
parts from being damaged
Sheave Heater House A pulley like device used to transmit the power from the power source (electric
motor, etc) via belts.
Slide Bed Oven Body The sliding surface that supports the belt and product in a horizontal conveyor
application. Typical slide beds are constructed of steel in a haring bone or
perforated design.
Slip Clutch Conveyor Systems Designed to disengaged or slip when conveyor system is overloaded to prevent
damage to other components
Solenoid Electrical Components A solenoid valve is an electromechanical valve for use with liquid or gas .
controlled by an electric current through a solenoid coil.
Square-to-Round Heater House A sheet metal transition taking it from a square connection to a round
connection
Strip Chart Recorder Electrical Components Records process values including temperature and pressure produced in a strip
chart graphic.
Tadpole Gasket Oven Body Cylinder ally shaped gasket featuring an internal coiled wire complete with
attachment tail.
Take-up Conveyor Systems Device to remove slack from conveyor belt or chain.
Temperature Controller Electrical Components Allows setup program the heating, dwelling and cooling rates, and is a device
which monitors and affects the operational conditions
Terminal Block Electrical Components Mounted in control panels and junction boxes to interconnect component wires
